This year has been a wild rollercoaster when dealing with the weather. There are many factors that come into play when dealing with turf and the weather. A big issue right now is the heat stress that the turf plant is going through. Another big factor is the humidity. The humidity has been severely high over the past month now and that along with the high heat make disease pressure at the highest it has been all year. When trying to combat all this and give the turf the best opportunity to get through these difficult months can also lead to other difficulties down the road. The high heat and high humidity also bring with it the best time for  summer weeds to spread.

The most abundant weed in our area right now that causes a lot of headaches is the dreaded crabgrass. This time of year poses the biggest risk for the spread of crabgrass due to the plant going to seed. The mature plant starts to produce seed and spread. Most of the seeds go unnoticed this year, but they will overwinter in the soil and can germinate next spring. It is important to try and prevent the plant from maturing. Controlling crabgrass is a war not a battle. It takes time to get complete control over the plant. Hand pulling them can be an effective way to eradicate them however, sometimes hand pulling is not an option, that’s where we come in.

Here at Delaware Valley Turf we are constantly on the lookout for crabgrass when treating a property. Being able to get some control now will be vital in helping to stop it in the future and that is why it is so important to make sure you get pre-emergent down in the spring time to help control and prevent those seeds from germinating. By applying pre-emergent in the spring, it will help control any weed seeds that may lie dormant in the soil from over wintering.  By getting multiple applications of pre-emergent down in the spring it will help to limit the amount of weeds needed to control later in the year. If you are looking to get an aeration and seeding, the best time is in the fall. If you put seed down in the spring that will prevent you from putting down the pre-emergent which is a very important application.
